Choosing Patio Umbrella Bases

It is critical that patio umbrella bases are properly weighted to prevent them from tipping over from its own top end weight or flying off in a breeze. The proper weight depends on the size of the umbrella and whether it is to be used through a table or freestanding.

The diameter of the umbrella shade is important when determining the weight needed to hold the umbrella. If it is  freestanding unit, it will need a much heavier base as compared to a unit that is through a table.

Make sure that the umbrella base is the correct weight to hold your umbrella. Freestanding umbrella base weights are 50 lb. or more. There is a longer sleeve for a base for a freestanding umbrella, to fit the umbrella pole. Some of the umbrella bases provide a locking mechanism or thumb screws for securing the pole into the sleeve.

Umbrella bases commonly have diameters of 13 to 28 inches. The average pole diameters are 1 ¾ to 2 ½ inches.
